Friday the 13th

Lucky me, blog. Today is my lucky day True enough. For most people, Friday the 13th is an unlucky day. In fact, scores [I dare say] scores of movies, books and comedic dialogues have been built upon this so-called black day.

I know it, but I don't follow it. When the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday, I get lucky.

According to folklore, there is no written evidence for the superstition surrounding "Friday the 13th" before the 19th century.  [curious] I checked.

It came about partly due to the theory that it is a modern day amalgamation of two older superstitions: that thirteen is an unlucky number and that Friday itself is an unlucky day. I say "Hogwash!" That's what I say.

Get this. According to Wikipedia, the number twelve is considered the number of completeness. Yeah yeah yeah... there are twelve months of the year, twelve in a dozen, twelve signs of the zodiac, twelve hours on a clock, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Apostles of Jesus, twelve gods of Olympus, twelve days of Christmas. I imagine, there are many more.

Twelve is a nice, neat apple-pie number XII. Whereas, the number thirteen is an odd number. It's irregular and uneven. It seems to be a complete number, except that it has one extra. It has a straggler. It's 12 [Doce] plus one. Well... no disrespect for the number 12, but it isn't even a prime number. 13 is. [sorry, that's the math part of my brain speaking.

There is also a superstition, thought by some to derive from the Last Supper -- that having thirteen people seated at a table results in the death of one of the diners. If we're talking about long-term, okay [Senòr Death will knock on everyone's door some day], but short-term… that's scary. I'll be sure to count seats at our next family get-together. No chair of death at my Thanksgiving table.

Really now, Friday has been considered an unlucky day at least for over a dozen centuries. Many professions regard Friday as an unlucky day to undertake journeys or begin new projects. Is this a bunch of nonsense, or what? Who am I to know???

It's true. Black Friday has been associated with stock market crashes and other disasters since the 1800s. It has also been suggested that Friday has been considered an unlucky day because, according to Christian scripture and tradition, Jesus was crucified on a Friday. Hmmm...

The connection between the superstition and the Knights Templar was popularized in the 2003 novel, The Da Vinci Code. However, some experts think that it is a modern-day invention created for commercial purposes.

There are conflicting studies about the accidents on Friday the 13th -- Fewer accidents and reports of fire and theft occur when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday than on other Fridays, because people are preventatively more careful or just stay home.

As for me, blog, I don't need to justify it. It's an historic fact that for my years on this God's green earth... Friday the 13th is a lucky day for this one. I revel in all 24 hours of the day.

I already won $20 off a Lottery scratcher. I am not superstitious, blog, but it's an omen. Something good always comes my way on this most auspicious day. Friday the 13th brings me joy and fortune. It may be my attitude toward the day, or it may be me, thinking positive when the world sits in fear. It's my lucky day, blog. How's your day?

Feeling lucky?
