Have you picked your lunch or main meal yet? Here's a little twist and turn from Sargento's. It's a "Cheesy BLT."
Cheese is a nutrient-rich food available in a wide variety of forms and flavors that fit easily into many healthful meal plans, including the Mediterranean, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), diabetic, gluten free, vegetarian, and low lactose. Cheese is not a major source of sodium in the American diet.
Cheese provides a source of high-quality protein. High-quality protein, or complete protein, contains all the essential amino acids in the appropriate amounts needed by the body. Emerging research continues to support the important role of high-quality protein in promoting optimal health.
Some claim, the bacon, lettuce, tomato sandwich (BLT) evolved from tea sandwiches served before 1900.
In the 1903 Good Housekeeping Everyday Cook Book, a recipe for a club sandwich included bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and a slice of turkey sandwiched between two slices of bread. The 1929 Seven Hundred Sandwiches book includes a bacon sandwiches with pickles but not tomatoes.
The BLT initials likely began in the American restaurant industry as shorthand for the sandwich,
Iceberg lettuce is the popular choice because it adds crunch without diminishing flavor from the other ingredients, but this turn-around recipe calls for a more full-flavored lettuce.
Provolone BLT Sandwich
Serves 1
Ingredients:
2 tsp. mayonnaise
2 slices multi-grain or sourdough bread, lightly toasted
1 large red leaf or romaine lettuce leaf
3 slices crisply cooked bacon*
2 slices fresh tomato
4 thin slices ripe avocado (optional)
1 to 2 slices Sargento® Deli Style Sliced Sharp Provolone Cheese or Sargento® Deli Style Sliced Provolone Cheese
Spread mayonnaise over toasted bread. Layer lettuce, bacon, tomato and, if desired, avocado over one slice bread. Top with cheese; close sandwich.
* To quickly cook bacon, place bacon on a folded paper towel, top with another paper towel. Cook in microwave oven 1-1/2 to 2 minutes or until bacon is crisp. You can also cook bacon spread across a baking sheet in the oven: the fat drains off but it takes longer, about 10 or 15 minutes. Traditionally, bacon is pan fried.
