Kitchen Review: Silicone Baking Mats

I was skeptical, but now I'm a believer.  One of my kitchen bug-a-boos is how my beautiful cookie sheets get goobie brown goop globbed on, and it's near impossible to get the surface new-clean again.

I finally decided to try these silicone baking sheet mats.  Wow! I choke up thinking about how fantastic fabulous they are.  They work. The mat keeps my beautiful new and my used cookie sheets nice and oh so much easier to bake food with.  I don't even need to use cooking spray.
Artisan (2 pk.) Non-Stick Silicone Baking Mat Setfits my best 18 x 13 inch cookie baking sheets.  Each one measures 16 5/8 x 11 inches.  The mats themselves are easy to clean, don't stain and don't bend out of shape. I don't need to put them in the dishwasher. I just wash with soapy water and rinse.

I can use them in the microwave and that's a miracle.  The glass dish on the bottom of my microwave always seems to get crusted-on food stuck it's surface.  I used to keep a paper towel on top, but now, I just keep one of these silicone mats on top and voila, it wipes clean easily.  The mat resist odors so the microwave always looks clean and doesn't look like an explosion of decayed food.

You do need to be careful not to use it as a cutting board.  It will get a cut.  It doesn't self heal, so keep knives away.  Treat the mat like it was a sheet of waxed paper, and it'll last for years.

I got the set online at Amazon for less than $20.00 -- a bargain, especially when I think about the cost of all my baking sheets and how these mats save me from having to buy more.  Very nice kitchen gadget, if you can call them a gadget.

Silicone is a low-taint, non-toxic material and can be used where contact with food is required. Silicone is becoming an important product in the cookware industry, particularly bakeware and kitchen utensils.  Silicone is used as an insulator in heat-resistant potholders and similar items; however, it is more conductive of heat than similar less dense fiber-based products.

Silicone oven mitts are able to withstand temperatures up to 260 °C (500 °F), allowing reaching into boiling water.  Molds for chocolate, ice, cookies, muffins and various other foods.  Non-stick reusable mats used on baking sheets.

Other products such as steamers, egg boilers or poachers, cookware lids, pot holders, trivets, and kitchen mats. An estimated 400,000 tons of silicone products were produced in 1991.

Here's a list of basic kitchen tools, gadgets and appliances.
