American Woman: 1885 Sarah E. Goode

Sarah E. Goode qas an African American Chicago inventor and furniture store owner,

The furniture she invented was a desk that folded out into a bed, allowing the user to save space in a tiny apartment.

Goode received a patent In 1885 for her “Cabinet-Bed.”

Goode’s invention predated the 20th century’s pull-down Murphy beds and pull-out sofas.

With her Cabinet-Bed, Goode—who was born into slavery and won her freedom after the Civil War—became one of the first Black women to patent and invention with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

America has been the benefactor of the love and courage of women since the day they stepped into the New World we now call America.

Women are problem-solvers both in and out of the home. That’s likely why many life-changing inventions and discoveries point to an American woman. They’ve given us solid leaders and inventions that transformed life, faith, family and the American Dream.

How important women are to the success of our great country.
