Home Business: How to Set Goals

When you start a home business online, you want to look ahead… do a little planning. Set objectives.

A business is a journey. You want to plan your every move so that when you get to the destination, is it where you want to be. It’s a simple step that many people overlook. Start by setting a goal for how much money you want to make… every month.

Make it a roadmap

Plan your goal
Once you decide to start a business, write your plan starting with how much money you plan to generate, how you plan to do it, and by what date.

The foundation of your business strategy is obviously to make money. You want to attract web traffic and then convert your website visitors to buyers. Success means two key elements:

1. Your specific goals (what do you want from your web business)

2. Your understanding of your target audience (who is your typical buyer)

Some business owners - new to online business sales - develop their website with no real purpose. They enter text and add images with no real purpose.

Typically, there is some sort of rationale, "you didn't know what else to do" - "it seemed like a good idea." Unfortunately, these reasons provide no guideline for the success of a site. Nor do they contain any criteria for measuring success.

To compound the problem, they give no real consideration to the needs, desires and characteristics of the target audience. This has led to some sites having poor content and zero conversion rates.

The Internet is here to stay and it gets bigger and bigger every day. More and more and more people turn to the Internet for information and products. Help them find your site and promote confidence in your business to stimulate sales.

Put your plan on paper
Put a plan on paper. It doesn't have to be a 50-page document. A few thought-out paragraphs help you see what you are trying to achieve. Write it down. Generalities won't work. What you think might be obvious is not a plan.

When you have a written plan, and it's time to make decisions about what your home page welcome message should say, for example, read your plan to help you know what to say.
