Copywriting: Blogging

Home Kitchen Cooks and Stay at Home Moms know how to read and write. That's why copywriting is so attractive to those who want to stuff more dollars and cents into the family cookie jar. Here are a few writing tips good to know.

One way to earn real money or extra money and one of the best work from home business is blogging.

According to Forbes, there are nearly 19 million women who write blogs. According to the Pew Research Center, while women mostly blog about life and home for the pure enjoyment of it, many generate money from blogging.

Bloggers must legally tell their readers that they receive a free product in exchange for a product review per FTC government regulations (check this for updates), but they don’t have to disclose how much they charge for the banner ad, or how many views they need in order to attract that banner advertiser. As a result, women bloggers zealously guard this information from readers and other bloggers.

The Forbes article noted that "in order to maximize their financial potential, women concentrate on one or two topics. This is reasonable because an advertiser wants a unique audience not a mix of audience interests. Business bloggers get a lot of attention as revenue-generators, but food, entertainment, do-it-yourself and fashion are hugely valuable verticals, as well.

There are even purely personal storytelling bloggers who are turning their way with words into a livelihood. "Women who blog are the new Oprahs, Marthas and Ermas,” says Bloger’s Elisa Camahort Page.

BSM Media's Maria Bailey, author of Power Moms says, "There’s the top 10% who make six figures, who write books and have deals with the Food Network. Then there’s the bottom 20% who are only doing it for the love of it and are not making any money. This leaves 70% of women bloggers — some 13.2 million — who blog for some modicum of profit."

While no two bloggers are alike, they all receive compensation from similar opportunities. From money as compensation to touting their product or business or brand, to free merchandise in exchange for a blog review is common and often considered a gateway to serious monetization.

Women who “familia commercialize” blogs initially start blogging product reviews. Most claim that free merchandise doesn't amount to cash-in-the-hand revenue [notwithstanding the FTC’s stance] the majority of women bloggers receive a minimum of $250 in free products every month.

Another road to blogger income is online advertisements which are more profitable for mid-tier or new bloggers. Bloggers with 60,000 monthly views earn $10-$20 a month from an affiliate links and are able to earn $200 a month for an advertisement posted on the side of the page and $500 a month for the leaderboard space according to blogger media kits.

Ultimately, women bloggers compare themselves to freelance journalists, both in what they provide and their financial opportunities.

"Blogging is no different from any other industry, in that the largest sums are earned by a relatively small number. That said, during these tough economic times, the ability for many women to be at home, earn income and contribute to the household income cannot be ignored.

Whether women or men or both use their earnings to pay the mortgage or simply generate discretionary spending, most agree that economic contribution is critical and part of what drives a general economy.
