How to Wash Your Hair

Mom never stops
being your mother
Do you think about how to wash your hair? Do you wash your hair on a schedule such as every Tuesday and Friday?

Do you wait to wash your hair until you feel it needs washing?

Most people are probably guilty of all of the above. In fact, there is a good reason to think about how often to wash your hair.

The topic of hair loss came up when my honey noticed that many news reporters have long, cascading hair.  Of course, most looks nice, shiny and perfectly styled.

After doing a bit of research and reviewing hair care products, here's what you may want to know about how often to wash your hair.

First, keep in mind that your hair has natural oils that bring out the shine. Shiny hair looks healthy and is what most women want. Men, too. But hair produces less natural oil as a person ages.

In other words, if you washed your hair three times a week and are now in your 40s, 50s or 60s, you may want to wash your hair less often.

Poor hair care habits -- such as washing too often, leads to hair damage, dry hair and even hair loss. Women lose their hair, too, and thinning hair is prevalent among women, as well as men.

How many times should you lather up? The well know mantra that you should lather up, rinse and lather up again (known as the shampoo and repeat mantra) is actually not necessary, but it is good for shampoo sales. [Hah ha]

Over-shampooing can cause your hair to dry out and can cause your scalp to become dry, tight and itchy. Here comes hair loss.

Of course, everyone knows how your hair looks if you don't shampoo often enough. How active you are affects how often you want to wash your hair.

Washing daily is not a good idea. A general rule is to wash your hair every two days, but every three days is okay, too. You can rinse your hair with warm water without adding shampoo.

Here's one thing you can do to stop losing your hair

Your hair is like a compass to your health. In other words, when your hair is healthy, so goes your overall health. The big problem of hair loss is poor nutrition. Poor eating habits. If the body fails to get the amount of vitamins, minerals and protein it needs, for example, the body cannot sustain healthy hair and hair growth.

Iron deficiency and anemia contribute to hair loss, as well. Bad snack foods also contribute to bad hair and hair loss.

As much as most of us love a big juicy hamburger with bacon, dripping with melted cheese and pile of fried potatoes, it's probably a good idea to limit these kinds of meals to maintain good health and good hair.

Eat healthy. Wash with shampoo 1, 2 or 3 times a week at most. Rinse your hair with warm water if you want to wet your hair to style it, omit the shampoo. That's news from the experts.
