This film is a bit over the top as far as blood and gore goes. So bring along a towel to sop it all up. But it makes its point and it makes it hard and hitting.
It's about a special task force gathered for one purpose. That one purpose is kill and kill bloody without mercy. Why then does it seem okay?
I guess that's why it's called a Spaghetti Western. Good gravy. What the heck is a Spaghetti Western anyhoo…
According to Wikipedia, it's a nickname for a movie group or genre under the category of Western movies. It became such in the 60s, because these types of films were made, that is… produced and directed by Italians. Sometimes, this also meant co-produced with a Spanish or German partner, in which case, the partners insisted that "their stars" were cast in the film.
"The typical team was made up of an Italian director, Italo-Spanish technical staff, and a cast of Italian and Spanish actors, sometimes a fading Hollywood star and sometimes a rising one like the young Clint Eastwood in three of Sergio Leone's films. The films were typically shot in inexpensive locales resembling the American Southwest, primarily the Andalusia region of Spain, Almería, Sardinia, and Abruzzo.
Because of the desert setting and the readily available low-cost southern Spanish or southern Italian extras, typical themes in spaghetti westerns include the Mexican Revolution, Mexican bandits, and the border region shared by Mexico and the United States." Wikipedia
So, now that we know what a Spaghetti Western is or rather what it means to be categorized as the same, we can better understand this film.
It is about killing Nazi's in retribution to the attrocities they (the Nazi basterds) inflicted upon Jews during WWII.
I loved to see Brad Pitt in this role, but he was cast with some amazing actors, some I never heard of before, but hope to see again.
The script was seriously humorous, not funny, but witty... especially in light of the killing going on.
I, myself, liked the film, but didn't enjoy it as much as other reviewers. If that makes sense. It's me. I love the well done Ninja movie where swords fly and blood sprays. But this movie, although apparently justifiable, seemed senseless in the portrayal of this story of revenge gone amuck. Taken to the extreme.
But… that said, there were some glorious parts that added suspense and a spot of mystery. Lots of violence. A definite war action type. Good.
I do recommend this movie for its entertainment value, but I would not call it a blockbuster. It's just an okay movie.
This movie gets my "Hatbox Award!"
