Why is Thanksgiving Happy?

Everyone wishes everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Why is that? Has anyone ever thought about it? Yes, you want family, friends and neighbors to have a happy day, especially a holiday.

I think people say "Happy Thanksgiving" as sort of an acknowledgment of the fabulous feast that is synonymous with the Thanksgiving Holiday. It's as if you are really saying, "Enjoy the turkey and trimmings on this special day, because good food makes you happy."

Yup! That could be the sum of it. But...

Sometimes, if not all the time, we tend to focus on the holiday itself and the surface meaning of good food, good friends. It's true, most Thanksgiving tables start with a thankful prayer and that's good. But…

As it sounds, the reality of Thanksgiving Day is that its the one day of the year where we all join together and say our thanks out loud just before the meal… a meal, by the way, prepared as a symbol of good and plenty that we enjoy.

For example, our home, cars, clothes, furniture, TVs, cell phones, vacations, groceries and so much more. Too often, I fall into a puddle because I think about life's challenges, including health problems and people who have hurt me or mistreated me.

That's why Thanksgiving Day is such a priceless day. It's the day to forget problems, hurts and mishaps. It's a day to focus on all the blessings that brought us to this day.

Our children, parents, siblings, friends, good neighbors and even our capabilities that we are blessed with. Smarts. Skills. Ability to live how we want. We are blessed with so much. Too often I take for granted, the many many blessings I have been given over the years. I vow to stop and be grateful way more often. I believe every challenge has a solution. I just need to focus on the solution, not the problem.

This year, my honey and I spent  one of the most enjoyable Thanksgiving's ever, except for one tiny happening.

Let me explain. We arrived at our son's home at noonish. It wasn't long before the dining table was an end-to-end feast. Steven and Tara offered the spread of spreads. We all joined in prayer and the eat'n jumped off to a pass and fill-your-plate marathon.

It was turkey and ham. Yummy! All the trimmings were aplenty. Mashed pots, stuffing and a delicious bowl of gravy. Double Yum!  Tara's fab green bean casserole, cranberry salad and homemade buttermilk pie was extraordinarily mouth watering. I had seconds. I have not mentioned everything, but be assured, It was a feast fit for a King's Thanksgiving family celebration. Thanks Steven. Thanks Tara.

I especially loved visiting with Stevie and Zachary who made the day so special. Love you guys! Mucho magusto [made up word].

Now, everything was going along fine. We played a few rounds of Hearts [card game] and then braced ourselves for the football game: Dallas Cowboys vs Saints. It was a great game. Loved it, except for one tiny number. The score. Well, you can't win em all [Maybe next season]. The thing here is the fun we had as a family. So, it's not the winning or losing. It's the togetherness that this sporting event offered us. Nice. Better than nice.

My Thanksgiving resolution this year is to be thankful… not just this day, but every day.

That's it for today, blog. Have a happy day!
