What Does the Good in Good Friday Mean?

Today is Good Friday. Good Friday is a religious holiday observed the Friday before Easter Sunday. On this day, Christians take time to focus on  the death of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Many Christians spend this day in fasting, prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross.

It is the most somber day in the Christian calendar. Even if you're not a practicing Christian, you can observe the symbolism of death before resurrection - a theme dating from a time long before the birth of Christ.

You may wonder how the anniversary of a crucifixion can be called "good." In the case of Good Friday, the word good simply means holy.

If you are a Christian, and you believe that the Lord Jesus Christ Is the Eternal Son Of God, and that He died for all your sins, then for you, Good Friday is the most saddest, the most solemn, and yet, the Holiest day of the entire year.

Indeed, it is not a day for celebration, it is a day for observing.

Wikipedia describes this day as one when the Roman Catholic tradition includes specific prayers and devotions as acts of reparation for the sufferings and insults that Jesus suffered during his Passion on Good Friday. These Acts of Reparation to Jesus Christ do not involve a petition for a living or deceased beneficiary, but aim to repair the sins against Jesus.

In the United States, 11 states observe Good Friday as state holiday. A holiday is a day designated as having special significance for which individuals, a government, or a religious group have deemed that observation is warranted. It is generally an official (more common) or unofficial observance of religious, national, or cultural significance, often accompanied by celebrations or festivities.

The word holiday derived from the notion of "Holy Day", and gradually evolved to its current form. In modern use, it means any special day of rest or relaxation, as opposed to normal days away from work or school.

Well, blog, this may be more than you wanted to know. But now that you know, what are you going to do? Whatever it is, make it good. Rest. Relax. Remember.
