Avoid Garbage Disposal Clogs

Mom never stops
being your mother
It's the holiday season and that means food, cooking and scraps for the garbage disposal. What a cleanup king the garbage disposal is.

From food scraps during meal preparation to scraping scraps from plates after the meal is done, the family home garbage disposal makes cleanup faster and easier.

However, the good disposal can clog, and no one enjoys a clog, especially when you're in the middle of cooking a holiday meal for the family.

Our family still bemoans the time many years ago when we were gathered in the kitchen and the garbage disposal choked. Yucky water spewed out, guck floated in the water-filled sink and the disposal died. It is a garbage disposal clog memory.

My honey and I replaced a bunch of appliances in the kitchen this past year, including our garbage disposal. It was still working, but struggling and a bit of a howler. The new one is quiet. It runs so smooth, it's almost a shame to feed it any scraps of food. It's a dream. Advice? If you need to get a new garbage disposal, don't skimp. Get the best. It's worth every penny.

Back to that fateful holiday when the garbage disposal clogged up. Our family learned the hard way [smile on face] what not to put in the garbage disposal. This includes potato peels, coffee grounds and peels scraped from carrots. Top chefs and garbage disposal manufacturers recommend that you also avoid dropping egg shells, rice and celery into your disposal.

Basically, any food that is hard, stringy, gummy or fibrous. If you have a doubt about whether to push food into your garbage disposal, throw it out. It's okay to put food leavings in the trash.

Here's a great tip that you may already know. You can sharpen the blades and freshen your garbage disposal by doing two steps: (1) Put a cup of ice cubes in the disposal every couple of week; and (2) Grind up sliced lemons in the disposal. It cleans away unpleasant odors.

Don't forget to turn on the kitchen water faucet before you hit the garbage disposal start switch, and leave the water running while you grind up and after the grind is done. Avoid garbage disposal clogs.
